Equality Bodies

On Sunday 13 March, Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms (Ombudsman) of Montenegro published a press release about starting an anti-discrimination campaign on the occasion of the European Action Week against Racism.

On 18 March 2016, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), Equinet’s member from Great Briatin, published the progress report on "Preventing Deaths in Detention of Adults with Mental Health Conditions."
This is a follow-up report to the EHRC’s 2015 inquiry into non-natural deaths of adults with mental health conditions who were detained in prisons, police custody or psychiatric hospitals between 2010-13 in Great Britain.
The EHRC inquiry found that serious mistakes were contributing to the number of deaths, and developed a series of recommendations for the various organisations involved.

The Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency from Germany highlights some of its work on combating discrimination on the grounds of race or ethnic origin.

Over the years, the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality (NCPE), one of Equinet’s Maltese members, has developed a number of videos on racism as part of its campaigns.

#EqualInBelgium?

March 18th 2016

The Belgian Equality Body, Unia (Interfederal Centre for Equal Opportunities), has launched a social media debate with numbers, graphics and the hashtags #EgauxEnBelgique and #GelijkinBelgië (in English: #EqualInBelgium) on equality in Belgium.

The new Norwegian Ombud for Equal Treatment, Hanne Bjurstrøm, was in Brussels last week to meet with important partners at EU level. Equinet was very pleased to have the opportunity to meet the new Ombud and accompany her throughout the day.

In October 2014, the Defender of Rights, Equinet’s French member, launched a call for a "commitment to the defence of equality in the fight against racism." Indeed, the Defender of Rights is responsible for promoting equality and fighting against discrimination. The institution is regularly called upon by stakeholders involved in fighting racism with regards to the propagation of racist remarks in spaces of public expression.

On the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, annually celebrated on 21 March, the Commission for Equality and Against Racial Discrimination - CICDR that works closely with the High Commission for Migration (ACM) launched a campaign to raise awareness against racism and xenophobia.

In the context of the European Action Week against Racism, we are highlighting different campaigns from around Europe to combat anti-discrimination on the ground of race and ethnic origin. We start with some campaigns from Finland.
