In case C-157/15 Samira Achbita and Centrum voor gelijkheid van kansen en voor racismebestrijding v G4S Secure Solutions NV, the first ever case in front of the Court of Justice of the EU concerning discrimination on the grounds of religion and belief, Advocate General Kokott issued her Opinion on 31 May 2016.

 

 

The European Commission announced today that it will be launching an infringement procedure against Hungary for on-going discrimination against Roma children in schools. The aim of the Commission’s decision to launch an infringement procedure is to ensure that Hungary will implement a solution to rectify the suspected violation of EU law.

 

The Slovak National Centre for Human Rights recently published the 2015 Annual Report on the Activities of the Centre.

 

On 20 May, the Office of the Ombudsman of Croatia, one of our Croatian members, had their annual report rejected by the Croatian Parliament by 63 votes to 49. According to the Ombudswoman Lora Vidović, “the rejection of the 2015 Ombudswoman Report in the Croatian Parliament represents political pressure on the independence of the institution. This is further supported by the fact that members of parliament had previously unanimously adopted the Report during discussions in relevant parliamentary committees.”

 

The Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR), has published its annual report for 2015 to the Danish Parliament.

 

On 19 April, Equinet Chair Evelyn Collins (Equality Commission for Northern Ireland) participated in a conference entitled ‘Getting the Balance Right III’, designed to openly discuss concerns around unfair discrimination with respect to insurance in the EU.

 

Since the beginning of the year, Equinet Chair Evelyn Collins (Equality Commission for Northern Ireland), together with members of the Equinet Secretariat, has met with a number of European policy makers in order to highlight the work of Equinet planned for 2016, to communicate the learning from the work of equality bodies on different topics and shed light on their particular relevance to specific policies and activities being planned or pursued at European level.

 

Roughly one in three people in Germany has experienced discrimination in the past two years. This is a key finding of the comprehensive survey "Discrimination in Germany", carried out by the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency (FADA).

 

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) issued guidelines to all 47 member States of the Council of Europe on how to prevent hate speech, support those targeted by it, and deal with its consequences.
