Equinet aims to strengthen and support equality bodies and acts as the expert voice of equality bodies to advance equality for all. Facilitating the development of expert and institutional capacities for our members and conveying the knowledge and expertise of equality bodies at European and international levels are two of the ways we aim to achieve those objectives.

In our capacity building and awareness raising events, we aim to have gender equality on all panels and to choose expert speakers representing a variety of minority groups. The voices of young people are included as often as possible. We try to include an intersectional approach and a broad range of voices on all topics, not just linked to a given ground of discrimination. Speaker diversity is something we strongly believe in and commit to promoting as much as possible.

On the 24th of April, the Annual Convention on Inclusive Growth (ACIG) on ’youth and social inclusion’ was held in Brussels. It brought together policy makers and civil society to discuss what the EU can do to ensure that all citizens reap the benefits of truly inclusive growth. Equinet and partners organised a side event on ’Ensuring the right of young people to adequate income’.

On April 6-7, 2017, a regional workshop for equality bodies on eliminating violence against women was held in Tbilisi, organised in cooperation by the European Commission, the Public Defender’s Office of Georgia and Equinet, within the framework of the European Commission’s Eastern Partnership Technical Assistance and Information Exchange (TAIEX) instrument.

This was one of the official events of the European Commission’s year of focused actions to combat violence against women.

This conference, which took place on 4 May in Brussels, set out to share the experiences of implementing equality duties, as well as good practice examples and discuss possibilities and challenges in introducing such duties in other jurisdictions.

On 9th and 10th March 2017, Equinet and the Croatian Office of the Ombudswoman for Persons with Disabilities co-organised a capacity-building seminar on Equality bodies tackling discrimination against persons with intellectual disabilities. The event took place in Zagreb, Croatia.

As part of its capacity building activities for members, and following on from the training held in October 2016, Equinet organised a second training session on social media use for equality bodies on 4-5 April 2017 in the Facebook Offices, Dublin.

On Wednesday 7th December 2016, Equinet organised the conference "Diverse, Inclusive and Equal: Innovating at the intersections of gender equality". The event was hosted by the Belgian Institute for the Equality of Women and Men in Brussels.

Equinet, together with the Hungarian Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, organised a one and a half day capacity-building seminar for equality bodies’ staff members about fighting discrimination based on the grounds of race and ethnic origin. The meeting took place in Budapest on 9-10 November 2016.

On 30 August, Equinet representatives met with a variety of social partners and civil society organisations in order to highlight priorities of Equinet’s draft Work Plan for 2017 and to hear about their current and future priorities in order to find synergies and ways for cooperating in the future.

On 13 and 14 October 2016, Equinet organised a training session on social media use for equality bodies, hosted by the Facebook Headquarters in Europe.

The General Assembly of Equinet Members will meet in Brussels on 29-30 September for the 2016 Annual General Meeting (AGM), and bring together heads and senior management representatives from all Equinet member national equality bodies.
