An important judgment was delivered yesterday (15 January 2013) by the European Court of Human Rights on a case touching upon freedom of religion, religious discrimination and the balance between competing Convention rights, notably those of freedom of religion and the prohibition of discrimination.

 

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) established that Greek authorities have been discriminating against Roma children by implementing educational segregation.

 

The UK Supreme Court dismissed the appeal case of X v Mid Sussex CAB, thus agreeing with the decisions of the lower courts that the appellant as a volunteer falls outside the scope of the protection against discrimination on the ground of disability afforded by European anti-discrimination legislation.

 

The Fundamental Rights Agency launches a report looking at some of the practical barriers that people who have been discriminated against face when accessing justice.

 

The FRA published two reports underlining that hate crime is a daily reality in the EU today. The reports highlight the need for the EU and Member States to make hate crimes more visible and hold perpetrators to account in order to better combat such crime. Both FRA reports look at hate crime from the perspective of victims’ rights.

 

The 2012 Equality Summit was held on 22-23 November in Cyprus, gathering more than 300 participants (government, NGOs, social partners, academics, independent experts, etc.) from EU Member States and acceding countries.

 

The European Commission released a new Eurobarometer on discrimination in the EU, looking into attitudes and perceptions of Europeans towards discrimination based on different grounds.

 

The European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, Mr. László Andor, announced the winners of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations Awards at a ceremony attended by all the major stakeholders and actors that supported and contributed to the EY2012 - including Equinet.

 

The Court of Justice of the European Union decides that the radical lowering of the retirement age for Hungarian judges is discrimination on grounds of age.

 

The fifteenth issue of the bi-annual European Anti-Discrimination Law Review, available in English is now published. The Law Review provides an overview of the latest developments in European anti-discrimination law.
