Equinet

Race and ethnic origin was the first ground on which EU legislation required Member States to set up equality bodies. Many Member States did so even before this became a legally binding requirement under EU law.

Equinet is commissioning a research paper on the evolution of the mandates and resources of equality bodies over the past decade. The planned research will aim to elucidate how the mandates and resources of national equality bodies have developed, and if there can be found possible correlative relationships between them.

Submission deadline: 2 May 2017 (09:00 AM)

As part of its capacity building activities for members, and following on from the training held in October 2016, Equinet organised a second training session on social media use for equality bodies on 4-5 April 2017 in the Facebook Offices, Dublin.

This study examines and analyses the design and implementation of statutory duties in equal treatment legislation that aim to go beyond a prohibition on discrimination to promote equality. These encompass preventive duties, institutional duties and mainstreaming duties. The study explores and assesses the role of, and engagement by, equality bodies in their implementation. In doing so, it draws from the experience and perspective of equality bodies involved in implementing such statutory duties.

On Wednesday 7th December 2016, Equinet organised the conference "Diverse, Inclusive and Equal: Innovating at the intersections of gender equality". The event was hosted by the Belgian Institute for the Equality of Women and Men in Brussels.

The fourth issue of the biannual European equality law review, produced by the European network of legal experts in gender equality and non-discriminatino (EELN) highlights a number of different legal and policy developments from across Europe are raised. As well as European case law updates and key developments at national level in legislation, case law and policy, there are a number of very interesting articles on using anti-discrimination remedies for discrimination speech, implementation of postive action measures for achieving gender equality, merging mandates of equality bodies and national human rights institutions, as well as concepts of sex and gender in EU non-discrimination law and policies.
